At the Shoe Lane Library today Dr. Peter Ross gave a free lunchtime talk on “Jack Sheppard: The Surprising Life, Crimes and Escapes of an 18th Century Criminal”. The talk was incredibly well researched, dispelling myth from fact and was illustrated through out with original artworks and maps. Jack was a local lad to us at WAG born within the Spitalfields area whose short life and exploits are still an inspiration today. To read more about the legend that is Jack Shepperd, and the other interesting characters such as Edgworth Bess, Blueskin Blake and the evil Jonathan Wilder, check out the wikipedia entry. Also recommended is the brilliant “London Hanged” by Peter Linebaugh for a thorough understanding of working class life and resistance during the 18th Century.
